Socketing
Items or abilities carry a fixed number of slots into which the player inserts separate modules, such as gems, runes or materia, that grant or modify capabilities; linked slots let one module alter another
Also known as: sockets, socketed items, gem sockets, linked sockets, mod slots
Definition
Socketing gives an item, or in some games an ability, a fixed number of slots filled with modules that are separate objects: gems, runes, materia. Each module grants or modifies a capability, and in linked slots a support module alters its partner. Equipment loadouts choose whole items into a character’s slots; here the item is the container and the modules move between items. Unlike skill-tree nodes, bought permanently with points, modules are found, traded and removed, and unlike item modification, which spends consumables to change an item’s own properties, a socketed module stays an identifiable object with its own effect.
How it works
In the canonical form (Path of Exile), each item carries sockets, some joined by links, and until patch 3.29 each socket’s colour restricted which gems fit. Active skill gems grant the character’s skills; a support gem does nothing alone and modifies skills in sockets linked to it, up to five on one skill. Gems move freely and gain experience while socketed. The decisions are which skills to carry, which supports to pair with each, and which items to wear for their socket layout, which arrives rolled on a drop.
Variations
- Linked pairs (Final Fantasy VII): links join only two slots and no colour restricts placement, lowering complexity.
- Permanent fusion (Diablo II): an inserted gem or rune cannot be removed, so the decision is taken once; the form shades into item modification.
- Ordered formulas (Diablo II runewords; Diablo IV runewords): a specific set of modules in one item unlocks an effect beyond their sum. Diablo II’s formulae were partly undisclosed, moving information to hidden.
- Capacity budget (Warframe; Eclipse: Second Dawn for the Galaxy; Pathfinder second edition): the modules’ total cost may not exceed the host’s capacity, a per-item form of point-buy.
- Ability-borne sockets (Path of Exile 2): supports sit on the skill gem wherever it is equipped, and item sockets take runes.
- Untyped sockets (Path of Exile from patch 3.29): sockets are colourless by default, according to press coverage, removing one sub-rule.
Design considerations
Parameters are slots per host, link structure, slot typing, removal cost and module growth. Removal cost is the main dial: free removal (Final Fantasy VII, Path of Exile, Diablo IV runes) makes configuration a reversible experiment, Pathfinder’s transfer fee makes it a cost, and fusion makes it a commitment. Because links and typing belong to the host, an item is valued for its slots, and a planned configuration waits on a drop with the right layout. Path of Exile 2’s move of supports onto gems, a change Chris Wilson said in 2019 could not be made “in a regular expansion without causing chaos”, loosens that dependency. Growth ties capability to use: materia gain AP only while equipped.
Analysis notes
Planning follows because a support’s value depends on its linked module, so a link group is planned as a whole. Engine satisfaction is tagged because several supports compound one active skill. Ownership arises because link groups assembled from found modules diverge between characters. Frustration risk follows when a rolled layout blocks a planned configuration through count, links or colours the player did not choose. Grind is tagged because obtaining a host with enough linked sockets takes repeated drops, a chase shared with loot tables.
History and provenance
The Final Fantasy VII US manual (1997) describes the full structure: “If Materia orbs are inserted into slots in weapons or armor, various abilities become available,” with removal at will and support materia in linked slots. Diablo II (2000) fused gems permanently into “socketed items”, and its expansion added runes inserted “in the proper order.” Path of Exile, previewed in 2010 with colour-coded sockets, links and support gems, built its skill system on sockets and popularised the vocabulary in action role-playing games. Pathfinder’s runes and Eclipse’s blueprints are tabletop and board forms. Pre-1997 antecedents remain unsurveyed.
Notable examples
| Game | Year | Medium | How the mechanic manifests |
|---|---|---|---|
| Final Fantasy VII Square | 1997 | Video | Weapons and armour have a set number of materia slots, some joined in linked pairs. Materia orbs grant spells, commands or stat changes and can be removed freely; a support materia in a linked slot enhances the materia in the partner slot, and materia gain AP and level only while equipped. |
| Diablo II Blizzard North | 2000 | Video | Socketed weapons, helms and shields, with up to three sockets, take gems and skulls whose effect depends on the item type, and a fused gem cannot be removed. Lord of Destruction (2001) added jewels and runes; runes inserted in the right order into a non-magical item with exactly that many sockets form a runeword with extra powers. |
| Path of Exile Grinding Gear Games | 2013 | Video | All active skills are gems socketed into equipment, and support gems in linked sockets modify them, up to five on one skill. Socket colours restricted which gems fit until patch 3.29 in July 2026, which press coverage reports made sockets colourless by default while count and links still matter. |
| Grim Dawn Crate Entertainment | 2016 | Video | A component is applied to an item of the types it fits, such as Sanctified Bone to chest or head armour, from a set player level. The Inventor will separate them for a small fee, but the player recovers either the item or the component, not both. |
| Pathfinder (second edition) Paizo | 2019 | Tabletop RPG | Weapons and armour carry fundamental runes and property runes. In the remastered rules (GM Core, 2023) an item holds as many property runes as its potency rune's value, and a rune can be moved to another item in a day for a tenth of its price. |
| Eclipse: Second Dawn for the Galaxy Lautapelit.fi | 2020 | Board & card | Each ship class has a blueprint of part spaces. The Upgrade action returns part tiles to the tray and places researched parts on empty or printed spaces, provided total energy use does not exceed production, and every ship of that class changes at once. |
| Diablo IV Latest Blizzard Entertainment | 2023 | Video | Gear sockets take gems and, from the Vessel of Hatred expansion (2024), runes. A ritual rune and an invocation rune in one piece of armour form a runeword, the ritual rune generating Offering on a condition and the invocation rune spending it; unsocketing at a Jeweler costs nothing and destroys neither runes nor armour. |
| Path of Exile 2 Grinding Gear Games | 2024 | Video | Support sockets sit on the skill gems themselves, most starting with two and Jeweller's Orbs adding more, while item sockets, one or two by slot and added with Artificer's Orbs, take runes. |
Provenance
Earliest documented use: Final Fantasy VII (1997), video. Confidence: medium. The US instruction manual (1997) documents the whole structure: materia inserted into slots in weapons and armour, removal at will, and linked slots in which support materia enhances the paired materia. The Japanese release and its manual are not cited, and pre-1997 video and tabletop antecedents remain unsurveyed, so confidence is medium. Path of Exile (2013) is the populariser of the socket-and-link form in action role-playing games.
Established form: Path of Exile (2013), video. 16 years after the earliest documented use. Confidence: medium. Path of Exile built its skill system on sockets, links and support gems and popularised the socket-and-link form and its vocabulary in action role-playing games.
