Difficulty Gradient
Opposition and rewards are fixed to places and rise with dungeon depth, zone or map tier, so that the world itself forms a ladder that the character climbs by choosing how far down or out to go
Also known as: Zone Levels, Area Level, Dungeon Depth
Definition
A difficulty gradient fixes opposition and rewards to places, so that they rise with dungeon depth, zone or map tier and the world becomes a ladder the character climbs. It is vertical and its scope is the world: what grows is the danger and the payoff of where the character stands. Enemy level scaling keys opposition to the character’s level instead, and monsters keyed to depth alone, as in Rogue, belong here. Level sync scales the character to a zone’s level; a difficulty gradient gives the zone that level. Difficulty settings rescale the same content; a chosen map tier sits on the boundary, since the player picks the rung, but the rung is a place with its own fixed level, while Path of Exile’s map modifiers stay with difficulty settings.
How it scales
Each place carries a number: the level beneath the surface, a zone’s level range, a Map Level or Waystone tier. That number selects which monsters may appear and how much treasure lies there. In 1974 Dungeons & Dragons a matrix moves the wandering-monster roll toward stronger tables with each level down, and Rogue draws monsters within five places of the dungeon level on a list ordered from weak to strong. The character’s level does not enter the draw, so a character who descends too fast meets opposition above it, and one who lingers outgrows a level. The bottom of the range is the entrance or starting zone. The top is the end of Rogue’s 26-type list, World of Warcraft’s zones of 53 to 60, or the highest map tier.
Variations
- Depth (Dungeons & Dragons, Rogue, Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord): levels stacked below an entrance, each harder than the last.
- Zone ranges (World of Warcraft): open regions labelled with a band of levels, laid out as a route.
- Tiered maps (Path of Exile, Path of Exile 2): end-game areas held as items with a level or tier, which drop further maps at the same or a higher tier.
Basis
Every example is keyed to content-level, the number assigned to the place. The tiered maps of Path of Exile and Path of Exile 2 add difficulty-tier, because the player chooses which tier to open. The tabletop form leaves the matrix to the referee; video games from Rogue onward apply it at generation.
History and provenance
The earliest rules cited are The Underworld & Wilderness Adventures (1974), which ties monster tables and treasure to the level beneath the surface and reminds the referee that egress to lower levels is desirable. Rogue (1980) put the depth-keyed draw into code, as the source of version 3.6 (1981) shows, and Wizardry (1981) placed its best items in the depths. Massively multiplayer games spread the dungeon level over open zones, as World of Warcraft’s zone level ranges show. Path of Exile (2013) turned the rungs into items with a Map Level, and Path of Exile 2 (2024) keeps the ladder as Waystone tiers.
Notable examples
| Game | Year | Medium | Basis | How the scaling works |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dungeons & Dragons Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson (Tactical Studies Rules) | 1974 | Tabletop RPG | Content level | Wandering monsters are drawn from six monster level tables through a matrix keyed to the level beneath the surface, shifting toward the stronger tables with depth until the thirteenth level and below use only the sixth. Room treasure rises the same way, from silver in hundreds on the first level to thousands of silver and gold below the twelfth. |
| Rogue Michael Toy, Glenn Wichman, and Ken Arnold | 1980 | Video | Content level | Each new monster is drawn from a list of 26 types running from the kobold to the purple worm, at a position set by the dungeon level plus or minus up to five, and takes its type's fixed statistics. The status line's Level counts how deep the character has gone. |
| Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord Sir-Tech | 1981 | Video | Content level | The manual places the most important magic items in the depths of the maze, usually guarded by fearsome monsters, makes the chance of fleeing a fight depend on depth, and offers further scenarios with greater perils and rewards for the same characters. |
| World of Warcraft Blizzard Entertainment | 2004 | Video | Content level | Each zone carries a level range, from 1 to 10 in starting zones such as Elwynn Forest and Tirisfal Glades through 10 to 20 in Loch Modan to 53 to 60 in the Eastern Plaguelands, and the official guide tabulates the ranges beside each zone's PvP status. |
| Path of Exile Grinding Gear Games | 2013 | Video | Content level, Difficulty tier | End-game areas are Map items, each with a Map Level, 61 on the developer's sample, and modifiers that alter its challenges and rewards. A map is used once to open its area. |
| Path of Exile 2 Latest Grinding Gear Games | 2024 | Video | Content level, Difficulty tier | End-game maps are opened with Waystones in numbered tiers, reportedly setting area level from 65 at tier 1 to 80 at tier 16. Content Update 0.2.0 made Waystones drop at no lower tier than the current map, and those from map bosses one tier higher. |
Provenance
Earliest documented use: Dungeons & Dragons (1974), tabletop rpg. Confidence: medium. The Underworld & Wilderness Adventures (1974) keys wandering monsters and room treasure to the level beneath the surface, the earliest rules cited for opposition and reward set by place. Arneson's and Gygax's campaigns before publication and the PLATO dungeon games of the mid 1970s remain unsurveyed, so confidence is medium. Rogue (1980) carried the depth-keyed draw into a computer game, and World of Warcraft (2004) shows the zone form.
