Silence

An ability that stops a target, or everyone in an area, from casting spells or using abilities for a set time while it can still move and make ordinary attacks; often resisted by a save or an immunity, or cured.

Also known as: silenced, Silence 15' Radius, MONTINO, StopSpell, STOPSPELL, MUTE, Global Silence, Last Word, Soul Burn, Orim's Chant, Abeyance, lockout

Definition

A silence bars a target, a group, an area, or a whole side from casting spells or using abilities for a bounded time, while movement and ordinary attacks remain. Stun is the full stop, removing movement, attacks, and abilities together; a silence removes one kind of action. Counterspell is a single instant negation of one spell as it is cast; a silence acts on future casting for a duration. The timing that answers a cast belongs to the interrupts and reactions mechanic, not to either ability. World of Warcraft’s Kick, which interrupts the spell being cast, sits on the counterspell side, and its Improved Kick talent’s chance to silence for 2 seconds is a silence. Status effects covers the condition as a system.

Behaviour

Tabletop silence is a sphere of no sound placed at a point or on an object, or anchored to a creature and moving with it. In Dungeons & Dragons the ban runs through the component system: only spells with a verbal component fail, and the Players Handbook’s sample combat answers one with a spell that needs none. Video forms target one enemy (MUTE), one group (MONTINO), or the whole map (Global Silence), for 2 to 6 seconds in real-time games; Magic’s Silence acts on players for one turn. Counterplay includes a save against becoming the anchor, a cure (AMUT), resistance talents (Unbreakable Will), and StopSpell’s chance to fail.

Variations

  • Side-wide (Dota 2, Magic: The Gathering): Global Silence or the card Silence locks out every enemy at once.
  • Punish on cast (Dota 2): Last Word silences its target if it casts, or when its timer expires.
  • Proc or rider (World of Warcraft, Magic: The Gathering): Improved Kick and Improved Shield Bash silence on a 50% chance; Render Silent counters a spell, then bars its controller from casting that turn.
  • Category lockout (Magic: The Gathering): Brand of Ill Omen bars creature spells only; Abeyance bars instants, sorceries, and non-mana abilities.
  • Text removal (Hearthstone): the Silence keyword reportedly strips a minion’s card text and enchantments permanently while leaving it free to attack.

Gating

Tabletop silence holds a 2nd-level slot from Greyhawk to the 2024 edition; its duration moves from 2 rounds per caster level in 1978 to concentration for up to 10 minutes in the 5th and 2024 editions, which also allow it as a ritual. Wizardry and Final Fantasy count spell points per level, refilled at an inn; Dragon Quest charges 2 MP from a shared pool. Magic pays mana and spends the card. World of Warcraft and Dota 2 pair mana with cooldowns, and World of Warcraft’s Improved Kick also silences on a 50% chance; Dota 2 makes the map-wide form an ultimate on a 120-second cooldown and puts one on an item.

History and provenance

Greyhawk (1975) named Silence 15’ Radius as a stealth spell, and the Players Handbook (1978) is the earliest cited text in which silence stops casting. Wizardry’s MONTINO, Dragon Quest’s StopSpell, and Final Fantasy’s MUTE carried the lockout into computer and console games. Magic: The Gathering added partial lockouts from 1995 and a card named Silence in 2009; World of Warcraft (2004) made it a talent and an interrupt rider, and Dota 2 built the hero Silencer around it.

Provenance

Earliest documented use: Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, Players Handbook (1978), tabletop rpg. Confidence: medium. The Players Handbook (1978) is the earliest cited text in which a silence stops spellcasting: Silence 15' Radius makes an area where "spells cannot be cast", and the book's sample combat has a silence spoil a prismatic spray. Greyhawk (1975) is an antecedent: it adds the named spell, its 15-foot radius and range, as a way to move with no sound or to silence an object, and never says that spells fail inside it; the scan cited is a 1979 printing. Men & Magic (1974) has no silence spell. Whether a 1975 to 1977 text (Eldritch Wizardry, Holmes Basic, The Strategic Review, The Dragon) or table practice already barred silenced casters remains unsurveyed, hence medium confidence. The earliest cited video instance is Wizardry's MONTINO, from a manual printed between 1981 and 1987, so its presence in the 1981 release is unconfirmed; earlier PLATO games remain unsurveyed. The earliest cited card instance is Magic's Abeyance (1997).
