Polymorph
An ability that transforms a target, usually an enemy, into a weaker or harmless creature, replacing its form and removing its attacks and abilities, for a duration or until dispelled; often resisted by a save or ended by damage.
Also known as: Polymorph Others, Polymorph Other, Toad, frog, Turn to Frog, Frogify, Hex, sheep, sheeping, Whimsy, Pongify, Ovinomancer, wand of polymorph
Definition
Polymorph imposes a lesser creature’s form on a target, replacing its body and statistics so that it loses its attacks and abilities, for a duration, until dispelled, or permanently. Stun stops a target without changing its form; stun’s Stasis variation, StarCraft’s Stasis Field, freezes the target intact and immune. Charm turns a target to the user’s side; polymorph disables it without changing its side. Self-transformation, from Polymorph Self to druid forms, is a self-buff outside the definition, as is petrification, which makes the target an object.
Behaviour
The caster targets one creature, usually an enemy, at range. The replacement is a sheep, frog, insect, critter, or 1/1 token; World of Warcraft’s sheep still wanders but cannot attack or cast. Counterplay includes a save in Dungeons & Dragons, stamina in Warcraft II, a break on damage in World of Warcraft, a cure item in Final Fantasy II, and a duration of seconds in Wild Rift. A permanent change works as removal, though Hearthstone’s Sheep can still deal 1 damage.
Variations
- Permanent or until dispelled (Dungeons & Dragons, Warcraft II, Hearthstone): the form is removal; the Players Handbook (1978) adds a system-shock roll that can kill the creature.
- Timed, broken by damage (World of Warcraft): the target is held out of a fight until hit or until time runs out.
- Random form (Rogue, Magic: The Gathering’s Mirage Polymorph): the replacement may be stronger.
- Destroy and replace (Ovinomancer, Pongify in Magic: The Gathering): the creature is destroyed and its controller receives a lesser one.
- Curable status (Final Fantasy II): an item removes the frog form, and a frog party member counts as defeated.
- Hit-point shell (Dungeons & Dragons, 2024 edition): the target gains the beast’s hit points as temporary hit points, and the form ends when they are gone.
Gating
Tabletop forms use spell slots: in 1974 a 4th-level Magic-User slot, available from 7th level, beside a wand’s 100 charges and a one-use curse scroll. The 2024 edition adds concentration of up to an hour. Rogue’s wand holds 3 to 7 charges and stays unidentified until zapped. Final Fantasy II and the Warcraft games spend mana, and Warcraft II adds a one-time research cost. World of Warcraft’s 2004 guide lists no cooldown; mana, cast time, one target at a time, and the break on damage limit it, and against players it reportedly falls under diminishing returns. Card games spend mana and the card. Wild Rift uses a short cooldown alone. Real-time games shorten the form to seconds.
History and provenance
The earliest documented use is Polymorph Others in Men & Magic (1974), printed as a separate spell from Polymorph Self; Monsters & Treasure adds the wand and a curse that turns victims into insects. Chainmail’s second edition (1972) has no polymorph, and its third (1975) only a self-transformation. Rogue’s wand is cited from the 1981 source. Square Enix places Toad’s first appearance in Final Fantasy II (1988), not the 1987 Final Fantasy. The sheep appears in Warcraft II (1995), becomes timed in Warcraft III (2002), and gives World of Warcraft players the verb “sheep”. The earliest cited Magic: The Gathering transformation is Mirage’s Polymorph (1996), and Hearthstone (2014) made the sheep a basic card.
Notable examples
| Game | Year | Medium | Gating | How the ability behaves |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dungeons & Dragons Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson (Tactical Studies Rules) | 1974 | Tabletop RPG | Spell slots, Charges, Consumable | Polymorph Others, a 4th-level Magic-User spell with a range of 6 inches, lasts until dispelled and gives the target all characteristics of the new form, as with "a troll polymorphed into a snail". The spell states no save; the save matrix lists polymorph under wands. A Wand of Polymorph with 100 charges projects it, and a Curse Scroll can polymorph its victims to insects. |
| Rogue Michael Toy, Glenn Wichman, and Ken Arnold | 1980 | Video | Charges | A wand of polymorph zapped in a direction hits the first monster in line and replaces it with a random monster of the 26 letter types, which may be stronger and then chases the player. Wands hold 3 to 7 charges, and the wand is identified when the change is seen. The rule is cited from the 1981 3.6 source; the 5.4 source keeps it. |
| Final Fantasy II Square | 1988 | Video | Mana | A black-magic spell turns the target into a frog, and the manual, partly garbled in the scanned text, says a frog is powerless against any opponent; a shop item restores a character whose form magic has changed. Square Enix describes the Toad status as lowering accuracy and blocking magic, with a toad party member counted as defeated. |
| Magic: The Gathering Richard Garfield (Wizards of the Coast) | 1993 | Board & card | Mana, Consumable | Mirage's Polymorph (1996, a 3U sorcery) destroys a creature, and its controller reveals cards until a creature card, which enters instead. Visions' Ovinomancer (1997) destroys a creature and gives its controller a 0/1 Sheep. Turn to Frog (Magic 2012, a 1U instant) makes a creature a 1/1 blue Frog with no abilities until end of turn. |
| Warcraft II Blizzard Entertainment | 1995 | Video | Mana | The Mage's Polymorph, researched for 2,000 gold and cast for 200 mana, permanently turns a target into "a creature of the wilds" that can no longer be commanded, which players treat as a one-cast kill. The manual says a target of greater stamina is less likely to be changed. |
| World of Warcraft Blizzard Entertainment | 2004 | Video | Mana | A Mage spell from level 8. Rank 1 costs 60 mana, takes a 1.5-second cast at 30 yards, and turns an enemy into a sheep that wanders for up to 20 seconds, cannot attack or cast, and regenerates quickly. Any damage ends it, only one target can be polymorphed at a time, and rank 4, at level 60 for 150 mana, lasts 50 seconds. |
| Dota 2 Valve | 2013 | Video | Mana, Cooldown | Lion's Hex turns an enemy unit into a harmless beast with its special abilities disabled and 120 base movement speed for 2 to 3.2 seconds, and instantly destroys illusions; 110 to 200 mana, 24 to 12 s cooldown in 2026 data. The Scythe of Vyse item's Hex makes a critter for 2.8 seconds that is silenced, muted, and disarmed. |
| Hearthstone Blizzard Entertainment | 2014 | Video | Mana, Consumable | Polymorph, a 4-mana Basic Mage spell card, reads "Transform a minion into a 1/1 Sheep." The change is permanent, and the Sheep can still deal 1 damage. The Shaman's Hex does the same for one mana less. |
| League of Legends: Wild Rift Latest Riot Games | 2020 | Video | Cooldown | Lulu's Whimsy, cast on an enemy, "turns them into an adorable critter that can't attack or cast spells"; cast on an ally, it grants attack speed and movement speed instead. The form reportedly lasts 1 to 1.75 seconds by rank, on a cooldown of about 14 to 17 seconds. |
Provenance
Earliest documented use: Dungeons & Dragons (1974), tabletop rpg. Confidence: high. Men & Magic (1974) prints Polymorph Others as a 4th-level Magic-User spell that lasts until dispelled and gives the target the new form's characteristics, separate from Polymorph Self, which is shorter and grants no combat abilities. Monsters & Treasure (1974) adds a Wand of Polymorph and a Curse Scroll result that polymorphs to an insect. The spell text states no save; applying the save matrix's wand column to the spell is a reading. Chainmail is not an antecedent for the target form: its second edition (1972) has no polymorph spell, and the third (1975) has a self-only Polymorph. Pre-publication campaign use is unconfirmed. The Players Handbook (1978) adds the system-shock roll that can kill the transformed creature. The earliest cited video instance is Rogue's wand, from the 1981 3.6 source; its presence in the 1980 build is unconfirmed.
Established form: World of Warcraft (2004), video. 30 years after the earliest documented use. Confidence: low. World of Warcraft's sheep, a harmless form held for a limited time that any damage ends, gave players the verb "sheep" and is the reference form of the timed polymorph. Warcraft Wiki traces the spell from Warcraft II's critter and Warcraft III's timed sheep through World of Warcraft to Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm, all Blizzard games. Confidence is low because that lineage is a wiki's and stays within one publisher, and Dungeons & Dragons' Polymorph Others, which lasts until dispelled, is the older form and name.
