Execute

An attack or effect that kills outright, or deals sharply increased damage to, a target whose remaining health is below a threshold or already reduced, so it finishes foes that other damage has worn down

Also known as: Power Word Kill, Power Word, Kill, Culling Blade, Takedown, Fatal Blow, Death From Below, Demacian Justice, Noxian Guillotine, finishing blow, finisher, execute range, execute phase

Definition

An execute is a damage ability that kills, or deals sharply increased damage to, a target whose remaining health is below a threshold or already reduced, so it finishes what other damage began. Backstab keys its bonus to position or awareness instead, and a coup de grâce on a helpless target belongs to backstab, since its trigger is a defensive lapse rather than health. Critical hits key a kill to a band of the attack roll, and spells capped by hit dice measure the target’s strength, not its wounds. Life drain returns damage to the user as healing; an execute’s payoff is the kill. A threshold that stops rather than kills is a stun; Mortal Kombat’s Fatality, after the match is won, changes no outcome.

Behaviour

Most forms strike one enemy, at spell range or in melee. The threshold is checked as the ability resolves: above it, the ability does nothing (Greyhawk, Star Wars: Unlimited), cannot be used (World of Warcraft), or deals ordinary damage (the 2024 rules). Greyhawk mentions no saving throw, and the 1978 and 2024 rules allow none. Counterplay is keeping health above the line.

Variations

  • Fallback damage (Dungeons & Dragons 2024 edition, League of Legends): a kill at or below the number, fixed or reduced damage above it.
  • Execute window (World of Warcraft): usable only below 20 percent health, with spare rage converted into damage.
  • Damaged flag (Magic: The Gathering, Hearthstone): any damage qualifies, so the card needs another damage source.
  • Missing-health scaling (League of Legends): Garen’s damage rises with missing health, without a hard threshold.
  • Kill refund (Dota 2, League of Legends): a kill resets the cooldown or allows a free recast.
  • Unpreventable strike (Dota 2 since patch 7.31): flat pure damage whose kill cannot be prevented, with no threshold; a borderline case.
  • Stagger finisher (Doom, 2016): damaged enemies enter a stunned state, and a melee glory kill finishes them and restores the player’s health.

Gating

The gate shared by every example is the target’s state, which no gating term names; a metered gate sits on top. Tabletop forms spend a 9th-level slot in 1975, 1978, and 2024, and the threshold rose with hit-point totals, from 50 to 60 to 100. World of Warcraft makes the ability cheap in rage but confines it to the last fifth of the target’s health. MOBAs put it on an ultimate with a 70 to 120 second cooldown, usually with mana and a kill refund. Card games charge one mana for Fatal Blow and Execute, which need earlier damage; Takedown costs 4, and its fixed threshold meets small units unaided. Every card form is discarded on play.

History and provenance

The earliest documented use cited is Power Word—Kill in Greyhawk (1975), which kills any creature of up to 50 hit points. Neither Greyhawk nor the 1978 Players Handbook says whether current or maximum hit points are meant, so confidence is medium; the 2024 rules read current health. Greyhawk’s Vorpal Blade and Sword of Sharpness, which sever on a high roll, are an antecedent through critical hits. World of Warcraft (2004) is the earliest video form cited; earlier video forms remain unsurveyed. Hearthstone’s Execute card is described as the World of Warcraft warrior attack, the documented line from that game; none is documented to the MOBA forms. Card games carried the damaged flag from Fatal Blow (1997) to Hearthstone’s Execute, and Star Wars: Unlimited prints the remaining-health threshold directly.

Provenance

Earliest documented use: Dungeons & Dragons Supplement I: Greyhawk (1975), tabletop rpg. Confidence: medium. Greyhawk's Power Word—Kill, listed among the all-new 9th-level magic-user spells, kills instantaneously any creature of up to 50 hit points. Confidence is medium because the text does not say whether current or maximum hit points are meant; read as maximum, the spell is a cap on the target's strength, like the hit-dice limits of Sleep, and falls outside the definition. The 1978 Players Handbook keeps the ambiguity at 60 hit points, and the 2024 rules settle it as current hit points. The reading as current health matches that of Power Word—Stun in the same book. Greyhawk's Sword of Sharpness and Vorpal Blade, which sever on a high attack roll, are critical hits and an antecedent only in their kill-outright outcome. World of Warcraft (2004) is the earliest video form cited, at low confidence: its 2004 tooltip is unconfirmed, and earlier video forms, such as EverQuest's Finishing Blow, remain unsurveyed.

Established form: World of Warcraft (2004), video. 29 years after the earliest documented use. Confidence: low. The warrior's Execute, usable only on an enemy below 20 percent health, is the best candidate the evidence supports: the Hearthstone Wiki's lore section describes Hearthstone's Execute card as the World of Warcraft warrior attack, "perfect for finishing off weakened opponents". The documented lineage is of the name; that the MOBA thresholds of League of Legends and Dota 2 follow World of Warcraft is undocumented, and the card's damaged flag matches Fatal Blow (1997).
