That is the whole-item form of the definition, not an excluded variation: in the game's data, as kept in Diablo II: Resurrected, the formula builds the result on the input's base type at the input's item level and draws its magic properties anew, so only the rolled properties change, even though the data makes a new item of that type where recipes that alter the input itself, such as adding a socket, keep it. No earlier reroll is cited in role-playing games before 2000, and the Korean and Japanese online games of 1998 to 2000 remain unsurveyed, so confidence is low. Path of Exile (2013) made in-place rerolling with consumable orbs the centre of its itemisation, and Diablo III's Mystic (announced October 2013) popularised the single-property form."

CCP's patch notes of August 2003 then let the maker of a copy set a cap on the items it can make, so that copies \"will have a limited use\", leaving copies already in the game unlimited; a guide of 2006 still lists \"a few very, very old BPCs\" with infinite runs. Star Wars Galaxies, launched in June 2003, seven weeks before that patch, is the other candidate: its launch manual and 2003 strategy guide describe manufacturing schematics fed to factories for mass production, but the chosen quantity is documented only from 2005. If it was present at launch it would come first, hence low confidence. EVE's unlimited launch-era copies are an antecedent."

Blizzard set out disenchanting into Arcane Dust and crafting chosen cards in a post of 20 June 2013, during the game's beta, with dust values by rarity; the game was released in 2014. It is the earliest instance cited, and the form is often credited to it, but digital card games of 2010 to 2013 remain only partly surveyed. An antecedent is the browser game Elements, whose players by 2009 sold unwanted cards and bought chosen ones, rares excepted, at its bazaar with the coins also won in play: a shop sale in the general currency rather than a crafting currency. No physical precedent in which a shop or publisher exchanges duplicate cards for a chosen card is cited; in physical collectible card games collectors meet the same need by trading, which the developers of Magic: The Gathering Arena named as what their wildcards replace."

Puzzle Pirates (2003) is a reported antecedent: a June 2004 column describes working a job with the Distilling puzzle, but that the puzzle's play sets the grade of labour a shoppe spends is cited only from a wiki, whether its crafting puzzles were all present at the reported December 2003 launch is unconfirmed, and the puzzle sets the pace of production rather than the item's quality. Ultima VII: The Black Gate (1992) has the player heat a sword blank with bellows, hammer it on an anvil and quench it, repeated, for a quest sword; whether the play changes the result is unconfirmed. The Star Wars Galaxies manual (2003) has crafters choose variables to improve at the cost of a lower chance of success, one choice before a roll rather than a played sequence. Other single-player games of the 1990s remain unsurveyed."

No earlier dye operation is cited from text MUDs, from earlier graphical online games such as Meridian 59 and The Realm, or from single-player role-playing games, but those fields remain largely unsurveyed, and the dyes of EverQuest and The Lord of the Rings Online are undated, so the title is not defended as an origin."

"note": "The earliest documented use cited is the manual of Vagrant Story (2000), whose workshops combine two blades, shields, or pieces of armour into a new item. A pair merged into one item that supersedes it is the mechanic as defined, which asks for two or more finished items and names the grade ladder only as its usual form: the pair is the Pair combination variation, not an excluded one. The game reportedly reached Japan in February 2000, and a GamesFirst review of 22 May 2000 gives its North American release as that month, before Blizzard announced on 28 June 2000 that Diablo II had started shipping; its Horadric Cube guide of August 2000 merges three gems of one grade into one of the next. Earlier video games remain plausible and are only partly surveyed, and no tabletop or board form is cited, so confidence is low. The melding jar of Fūrai no Shiren (1995) reportedly pours a second weapon's upgrades into a base weapon that keeps its identity, the form of property transfer, and the creature fusion of the Megami Tensei games, reportedly older, merges creatures rather than items."

"note": "The Men & Magic cost list is the earliest documented use cited: wizards manufacture listed magic items for stated sums of gold and weeks of game time. It is a short list of examples under a rule that costs are \"commensurate with the value of the item\", priced in gold rather than materials, and no earlier wargame or campaign rule is cited, so confidence is low. The earliest materials recipe cited in a video game is Darklands (1992), whose alchemical formulas list their ingredients; Ultima Online's Blacksmithy (1997) follows."

Its player's guide (ORIGIN Systems, 1992) describes armour that degrades in combat and is eventually destroyed, repair offered by some characters in conversation, and repair at an anvil whose success follows the Repair skill and which can ruin the item. Might and Magic III: Isles of Terra (1991) is an antecedent: its 1991 cluebook describes blacksmiths who repair broken implements, but names no wear or condition value that falls with use. Tabletop rules for equipment damage and other computer role-playing games of the 1980s remain largely unsurveyed, so the title is not defended as an origin. Diablo (1996), in its manual, and Ultima Online (1997), in a 1999 snapshot of its official guide, are the next dated forms cited."

The definition takes in study as well as breaking down, and asks only that the product be the knowledge to make the item, so research that keeps the artefact is the mechanic as defined, in its study-without-loss form, not an excluded variation. The manual does not say that a project uses up the item, the official strategy guide advises keeping one of each until it is researched, and the open-source reimplementation OpenXcom, in its rules for the original game, removes only live aliens when research starts. The earliest cited form that destroys the item is EVE Online's reverse engineering of relics (2009), whose relic is reportedly consumed. Earlier strategy games remain unsurveyed, and no tabletop or board form is cited."

Captures of the same page up to December 2000 describe smelting ore only, and the publish notes of February and March 2001 do not mention the change. Asheron's Call followed with the Ust, introduced with tinkering in its Repercussions update of 18 July 2002 according to the developer notes of that month. The recycler of System Shock 2 (1999) reportedly turns items into nanites, the game's money, an antecedent that converts to currency rather than to materials. Earlier MUDs and tabletop scavenging rules remain unsurveyed, so earlier instances are plausible."

The year is that of the source; Rogue was released in 1980, and whether that release behaved the same is unconfirmed. The Men & Magic cost list (1974) prices \"Enchanting Armor to +1\" as a single step, an antecedent. Hack's 1.0.2 source (1985) is the earliest cited form with destruction past a soft limit. Earlier computer role-playing games remain only partly surveyed: the Temple of Apshai manual (1979) and the Dungeon Masters Guide (1979) give no step ladder on a held item, but the PLATO games of the 1970s remain unsurveyed, so confidence is low."

The game launched in Korea in November 2008, and whether the service was present at launch is unconfirmed. Earlier Korean and Japanese online games remain unsurveyed, and separate cosmetic slots, which change the look without an operation on an item, are an adjacent form whose history is also unsurveyed, so confidence is low. World of Warcraft's patch 4.3 (November 2011) gave the operation its name, transmogrification, and is the widely cited form."

Aion's earlier appearance change has no documented line to later games, and outside Blizzard the line from patch 4.3 rests on the shared name rather than a stated debt, so confidence is medium."
